What are my environmental responsibilities as a manufacturer/retailer?

The environmental impact of the vape industry – particularly the disposable category – is a critical issue and one that the industry is working to address.

Individuals within our sector must ensure they are meeting their legal environmental obligations at all times. But what are your responsibilities?

Manufacturers or producers

Some of your responsibilities include:

  • Ensure you are properly registered as a producer – this will vary based on the amount of Electronic and Electrical Equipment (EEE) you produce.
  • Ensuring product feature correct symbols and markings

Retailers

Some of your responsibilities include:

  • Provide a way for customers buying new electricals to dispose of their old electricals on a like-for-like basis – whether in-store, online or through the post.
  • To keep a record of all WEEE taken back over at least four years.

More information on Waste Electronic and Electrical Equipment (WEEE) requirements is available here.

Further, the UKVIA has published a comprehensive 22-point environmental action plan for the sector which details ways in which the sector can further reduce its footprint on the planet. The ‘Greenprint for Sustainable Vaping’ is available here.
