BBC News: Call to ban sweet-flavoured e-cigarettes in Wales

Commenting on the BBC News Public Health Wales article, a spokesperson from the UK Vaping Industry Association (UKVIA) said:

“UKVIA are concerned that Public Health Wales would want to ban vapers from using flavours, as well as a host of other restrictions. We believe that, although vaping product flavour variability should in general be permitted, no vaping product flavour should be marketed or designed to appeal primarily to minors.

“Flavours play an important role in adult vaping product use, ensuring smokers find the products palatable and therefore easier to switch. The array of flavours allows users to create a distance between the experience of smoking and vaping. The choices could help prevent relapse back to smoking tobacco. The industry needs to be able to responsibly attract current smokers to our products.

“The Association believes all marketing, advertising and product designs should be directly aimed at adults who are seeking an alternative to tobacco. Importantly, any visual similarities between smoking and vaping will become increasingly less obvious as the technology and category continues to develop. In the UK we have a regulatory system that restricts advertising and controls sales to young people. Public Health England (PHE) have indicated that there is no evidence to suggest that advertising has encouraged young people to take up regular vaping.

“UKVIA strongly feel that any restrictions or blanket bans on flavours would be detrimental to vapers since this could undermine the use of vaping product as a tobacco alternative and would not lead to any clear public health benefits.”
