‘Warning on passive vaping bars’ – UKVIA Statement

Yesterday the UKVIA were approached to comment on a study conducted by the University of Berkeley into the potential toxicants found in e-cigarette vapour, which was then published in the Daily Mail.  Our comment featured in the article was this:

However, our full statement on the study is as follows:

“This paper presents an interesting modelling methodology for estimating exposure to chemicals and vapour, that certainly warrants further investigation.

“However, the study was just that – modelling. It did not involve a real human with a real vaping product. In fact, studies have shown that real life smokers making the switch to vaping experience significant reductions in exposure to harmful chemicals and toxicants.

“Additionally, the toxic chemicals found in vapour in this study are outlawed by EU regulations, and so thankfully cannot be present in vaping products sold by UK manufacturers. That’s why at the UKVIA, we are championing product quality standards to limit any risks to the consumer.

“Overall, the public health consensus in the UK is clear. Vaping products have been endorsed by Public Health England, the Royal College of Physicians, the Royal Society of Public Health and Cancer Research UK. We are pleased that now, with the announcement of the new Tobacco Control Plan, that the UK Government has as well begun to embrace vaping products for what they are – a massive public health opportunity.”
